Garden of Fragments is an installation that reimagines the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the myth of Princess Semiramis.
It transforms the garden into a sanctuary and a site for dialogue between human intervention and environmental activism. The work is conceived through the lens of environmental crisis, material culture, and collective renewal. It transforms discarded household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and stoves into multi-layered planters and micro-ecological structures.
The public installation investigates the intersection of material culture, memory, and transformation Household appliances are repurposed as sculptural markers of social change, consumption patterns, and the politics of obsolescence. Through processes of deconstruction and recontextualization, Bahzad Sulaiman revitalizes these objects. They are repositories of domestic labor and industrial surplus, turned into raw materials for contemplation and renewal.

 

 

Garden of Fragments situated in a public space in Örebro. With its framed openings and cascading greenery, the terraced garden becomes both a visual interruption and a place for ecological and industrial reflection. It is a metaphor for coexistence. The work blurs the boundaries between destruction and renewal, and between the artificial and the organic. It engages directly with the politics of sustainability, waste, and the climate crisis.
By reclaiming public space with a collaborative and ecological approach, Garden of Fragments embodies OPENART’s vision that creative communities build bridges, not walls. The project invites both passersby and collaborators into a shared imaginative space. In this space, technological remnants and natural growth are not in opposition. They are interwoven into new possibilities for transformation.
