Bahzad Sulaiman‘s installation ‘Resurrection’ is a product of the artist’s engagement with light in a sculptural context. Discarded electrical household appliances, which carry the traces of their former owners and symbolize their energy consumption, are piled up and light up from within in different colors. Appliances such as ovens, which in everyday use give off heat, gleam in cool colors.
In contrast, appliances with a cooling function light up in warm colors. Thanks to the composition, specially written by Siebe Thijs, the appliances, collected through an open call in Mannheim, combine to form an orchestra which casts a spell over listeners and invites one to think about the use of electric appliances which accompany us on a daily basis over a long time – before finally reaching their (supposed) expiry date.
